THE ERIC PLAKS – AQUILES NAVARRO ALBUM, “WINDOWS TO THE WORLD BEYOND”, HAS BEEN RELEASED ON NO FRILLS RECORDS!
La Colectiva en VIVO, desde el Sotano.
"Bemsha Swing" by Thelonious Monk, arr. Aquiles Navarro.
This proyect is about the creative expansion of Panamanian music, infused with all of its movement and sound with the swing and improvisation that is provided by the music of the United States known as jazz. This arrangment is based off of Monks/Best composition "Bemsha Swing", which comes from the word Bimshire, another name for Barbados, Denzil Bests native land. Plus, the roaring street drumming of the Panamanian parades called "Bandas Independientes". These drums make people dance in the streets of Panama all year round but especially in November for what could be called our National month. And if this wasn´t enough a five piece Quintet playing, improvising and providing a new dimension to these known sounds. The melody is aranged in a way that resembles the bugles from the "Banda Independientes and the bass line is displaced within the octaves to create a melody of its own, without changing a single note from the original chord progression. The swing feel and band sound come together for the first time as two cousins that haven´t seen each other in a long time, and they worked perfectly, no need to tweak or talk about it, they just fell right within each other. There is much more to keep developing from this sound and I am happy to see where it will go.
I would like to thank everyone involved in this. Recorded on Oct/10/2014
